The collaboration between the Mogens Dahl Chamber Choir and Swedish composer Sven-David Sandström on Nordic Mass, which was performed for the first time at the Bergen International Festival in 2014 and has since come out on CD, continues in 2018/19 with several major projects. The choral suite “Hvor er så dejligt som Din klode” was performed for the first time in 2015. It was followed by The Passion of St. John in the spring of 2016 at Konzerthaus Berlin and an opening concert at the Thuringia Bach Festival in Erfurt. Then there were also concerts at Lund Cathedral and the Church of Holmen in Copenhagen. The last concert was just issued on CD by the choir’s regular publisher in the spring of 2017.
What both the choir and the composer have in common is a focus on the Nordic mind's universe along with the will to challenge customary notions of vocal music's possibilities for expression.
Sven-David Sandström from Sweden is one of our time’s major composers. He has dedicated himself, among other things, to the renewal of Nordic vocal tradition and, in addition to the compositions mentioned above, has also penned other major church choral pieces, e.g. a St. Matthew Passion, which was performed in the spring of 2014 by the Berlin Philharmonic. He was awarded the Nordic Council Music Price in 1984.
Over the years, he has moved to a Neo-Romantic style that is perfectly suited to the Mogens Dahl Chamber Choir’s transparent, Nordic acoustic universe.
