SVEN-DAVID SANDSTRÖM (1942-2019)

For a number of years, the Swedish composer Sven-David Sandström was the ‘composer in residence’ of the Mogens Dahl Chamber Choir.

This collaboration included 'Nordic Mass', amongst others, which was premiered at the 2014 Bergen International Festival and later released on CD (Exlibris 2014). In 2015, the choral suite 'Hvor er så dejligt som Din klode' was premiered and, in spring 2016, the choir performed 'The Passion of St. John' in Koncerthaus Berlin as well as at the opening concert of the Thuringia Bach Festival in Erfurt. The work was later performed at the Lund Cathedral and at the Church of Holmen in Copenhagen. This work was also released on CD (Exlibris 2017).

In all projects, the common concern of both the choir and the composer has been a focus on the universe of the Nordic mind as well as on the willingness to challenge the general ideas of the possibilities of expression of vocal music.

Swedish Sven-David Sandström was one of the foremost contemporary composers. Like few others, he dedicated himself to the rejuvenation of the Nordic vocal tradition and, in addition to the works already mentioned, he has composed several major church choral pieces which will remain for posterity – amongst others a St Matthew Passion which was performed in spring 2014 by the Berliner Philharmonic. In 1984, he was awarded the Nordic Council Music Prize.

Over the years, he increasingly leaned towards a Neo-Romantic style which proved a perfect match to the transparent, Nordic tonal universe of the Mogens Dahl Chamber Choir.

Sven-David Sandström will be greatly missed by everyone involved with the Mogens Dahl Chamber Choir. However, his wonderful music will remain.
