ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The program's guitar works by Albéniz, Turina and Villa-Lobos have been known and loved by both classical guitarists and their audiences for generations, with their immediate charm and touch of Spanish and Brazilian folk music.

A number of the evening's works will be familiar to those who are already familiar with classical guitar. Turina wrote a number of guitar works for Segovia, of which Fantasía Sevillana was the first. The work was created in close collaboration with Segovia.

The three works by Isaac Albéniz were originally written for piano, but subsequently transcribed for guitar by, among others, Segovia, and it is primarily in the guitar version that these three movements have become extremely popular.

The Brazilian composer Héitor Villa-Lobos is his country's most significant composer, with an enormous output, including works for guitar. The five preludes reflect the composer's deep love for and interest in the indigenous culture of Brazil. The middle movement is dedicated to J.S. Bach, who was a great source of inspiration for Villa-Lobos.

Other guitarists have also been fascinated by Bach's music, and a large number of transcriptions of Bach's music for guitar have been prepared, including the mighty Chaconne from Partitan r. 2 for violin, in Sainz-Villegas' version.

The evening's program also includes works by the Paraguayan composer Barrios-Mangoré and Francisco Coll, the latter a work from 2023, as an example of contemporary guitar music.
